My son has a 2017 Audi A3 with the most basic MMI in it (see pics attached). The system is called MIB and a lot of posts on reddit say it's almost impossible for CarPlay to work with that system. They say you need to replace a ton of modules and parts in the dash. UNTRUE with this system!
I was worried nothing would work but I contacted carputech through their chat panel on this website. Their support was Amazing! They told me what to check, then asked for a bunch of photos of the car's settings to make sure they shipped out exactly the right unit.
The unit itself works better than the built-in CarPlay in my wife's GMC Yukon Denali. The wireless connection is super fast, and there are settings for brightness, contrast and EQ. A lot of other CarPlay boxes lose Bass when you install them but with this one everything is adjustable.
All the steering wheel buttons work but with Siri you need to either say Hey Siri or hold the car button on the MMI for a quick second.
Carputech for the win. It's so nice for a new driver to have Waze and other apps right on the dash.
Received the package about a week after ordering (in the US). The tracking was adequate. The box has all necessary for the installation. The installation schematics and connector coloring and placement didn’t match my model and MMI. Had to switch things around as those are not clearly marked on the MMI and the color scheme was off. But after that the unit worked as expected. So far no issues - Siri, messaging , telephone calls, Google maps and Apple navigation and functional using the built-in the car microphone. I have no feedback on call quality, but music and Spotify sounds good. Considering that the unit uses the CD player connection (it connects in between the input/output) the sound is as good as from the original MMI. The sound level is a bit lower, but this I see could be adjusted through the settings. The until allows to connect aftermarket cameras too (didn’t test it). All in all pretty clean and factory looking implementation. You have full functionality of the original MMI going back by switching of from the Menu button. There is a yea options to mirror phone and play media from USB (not tested). Installation is pretty simple, but those large connectors and thick cables are quite frustrating to work within the limited space (requires a lot of patience and cool demeanor). Make sure you support the glove box as when remove screws it would hang on the cables for the glove box light (or disconnect those to allow for more space). I installed the CarPlay box behind the climate controls and it fits there ok.
I have the 7 inch screen on my Audi A3 and the resolution looks good for all apps (satellite maps including). So far happy with my choice. Got replies on my questions so support can be provided if you may need. Recommend the solution for whoever needs it.
